Through the Wilderness of Life
Subtitle: The Duke Of Emali
Author: Richard Kiundi
I was born in a nondescript dusty little village called Kakulu located in modern Makueni county, a place of tranquility going back to 1750. The only disturbance was usually wars for cows, women and bounty between the Akamba and the Maasai. The Akamba managed to till the land and also kept some cows but forgot the missive from Mulungu, as in God, who allegedly decreed that all cows belonged to the MAA people. Naturally, they occasionally came to get what rightfully belonged to them. The Akamba warriors, called Athusi, normally consulted Mukeka, the medicine man, a prophet of sorts who using his gourd locally known as Kakulu, could divine through libations what fate would befall the Athusi if they made their raid. The hill of divination was called KwaKakulu and over time the village found its name from this activity. The hill of divination was also an "Ithembo" or Shrine.
